Dr. Nigel Crawhall is the Principal Author of Chapter 5, Societal influences and global change.

He is the Director of the Secretariat to the Indigenous Peoples of Africa Coordinating Committee. He has fifteen years of experience working with African indigenous peoples on international standards setting, human rights, environmental and climate justice advocacy.

He has been a regular participant in UNCBD and UNFCCC processes, the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, and has been a consultant to UNESCO on participatory cultural landscape mapping and intercultural dialogue. He is part of the international expert team working with the IUCN World Heritage Division on enhancing governance and rights-based approaches in the World Heritage Convention. He works in cooperation with the IUCN’s Global Drylands Programme.

He is a member of two inter-religious regional networks for environmental and climate advocacy and convened a high-level inter-religious panel on ethics and conservation for the 2102 World Conservation Congress.
